Core Level Selection
Re: Core Level Selection
I also suffer from stagnancy within sets of levels... With that said, I think it might be cool to have a secondary random pool/button. Maybe a pool of levels voted on by the community (10-20) that DO NOT include the core level selection. That button could be used to agree upon levels when both parties agree to use it--plus it would be a nice list of levels that the community has said, overall, are ones they think should be played.

I like that idea. A "something different" button.

And it could be adapted through the season for when a stellar level like Wrath is released, it can be added to the Atmosphere (outside the core) level list. I like it!

Um -- so that everyone is clear, a level has to be popular as measured by all four metrics at once, over a full season.
It also has to pass a sniff test as a reasonable place to have serious, high stakes matches. In the past, we've thrown out Ugh, June Bug, and Logic x2 for over emphasizing single skills, and Io for being too swingy for high profile games.

I do like this "something different" button idea. I would love a list of levels that are good, serious, levels, that could very reasonably make a core list if they were more popular. RIP, Adept, Salute, Barathrum, Anarctic, Godspeed, Converge, perhaps Valor, would all belong on a list like that IMO.

Drakona, I wasn't trying to make a disparaging comment about the merits of the map and hope you didn't take my comments about it in that manner. I was only using it as an example of how a small number of pilots can skew the popularity of a map by playing a wide array of people in it once of twice. Jedi's numbers at the time of my last post demonstrates exactly that. Its also indicative of how few other levels are played that in a single week a small number of pilots can rocket a new level that far up the popularity ratings in such a short time.
Mark's suggestion of a "something different" button is another way that could promote some more level diversity. It also has the benefit of making these selections more neutral so that it doesnt seem like one person is pushing a favorite non mainstream level over everything else.
On another note, why are levels with different missile levels considered independent levels? Its the exact same level just with a modifier. It seems like games played in logic, logic x2, logic x4, etc should all be rolled into the number of playthroughs for Logic.

Extra missiles completely changes how the level, and therefore the game, is played. Definitely makes sense to me to consider them practically a different level.

The level layout plays a much bigger role in to how its played than the number of missiles though. Increasing missile number predominantly increases hit and run tactics, spamming missiles down corridors, and camping missile spawn points
