Souljah was Bubble, Sirius--Not Bishop. Some believe the Artist known as "SIN" was also Bishop. I knew the guy though... haha

Cool thread. Got my start in the summer of 1997 shortly after KidThunder started playing. I was on keys for about 6 months and finally saved up enough cash to move to a 3dPro. Playing matches on Cases against the likes of Jedi, Satan(Spread-97), Daz, and others definitely influenced me early. After that it was live on the IDL with those same guys along with other players like Kufyit, Birdseye, Nitrate, Xciter, Lardass, TobyCat, Merl, and Lorddeath that impacted me most. There are MANY MANY others (some on this ladder, and some mentioned above), but those are the folks I remember most for some reason. If I had to pick a mentor it would be KidThunder. We never "trained" together, but my style (at the time) of "control" over "aggression" most resembles the way he plays. To this day if we play there is a level of tension between that only exists when playing D.

That's awesome man, your post made me smile. You also have a really f-ing good memory I couldn't even remember that we used the UDL around that time period.
The reason I called you "fodmorf", is because I called Mongoose "goose-mon", because it sounded kinda Jamaican to reverse his name. So obviously it made sense to reverse yours, right!?!? Right???

I came up playing single player, and then modem games with my friend Andrew ("Mr. Thork") who was always way better than me at strats while I was better at first person games.
By the time I got onto Kali, I already had a SW3DPro and above-average anarchy skills. The main influences on my game at that time were writers -- the Descent Weenie Tactics page and Sirian were the big ones, but lots of little posts on the DBB helped as well. I was good enough to more or less immediately make the cut for IDL, where I got stomped mercilessly, winning something like 2 of my first 25 matches. But I made it a point to ask people to play in their home levels, and try to learn the most I could, and I remember Humle being particularly influential because he was always willing to play and had a pretty solid overall skillset.
I went to my first LAN in Chicago in 1999. Sat between delirium and warmaster. Learned a lot from them. Also present were guys like Daz, Pavel96, and KidThunder (all fresh UT pilots at the time) and I made it a point to watch them play as much as I could. I think I won like 2 total matches at that LAN, but I also won an activity award
Over time I got toward the top of the IDL LT, and my main influences then were Saizen (Esp) and Kanzen, Tyranny, Avder, a bunch of PSF'ers (8-bit, Breadman, Sharpie), some CM's (Simmu, Mongoose, Kirian), and Humle and Alfa. Basically, the players who gave me tough games but who I could sometimes beat were the ones who really shaped my game. There were also a handful of UT pilots who were willing to be helpful in spite of my being both obnoxious and unwilling to play D2 -- TobyCat, Daz, and kufyit were the big three for me.
Through the D3 era it was Foil, DwnUnder, Swiss_Chz, Grendel, Animosity, and Gallows -- all versatile pilots who could rock any ship in CTF and be effective, even if the server was using a wonky setup with certain key guns banned.
In the modern era, I think everyone has been touched directly or indirectly by Jediluke's teaching and by Djcjr and Mark and MD's smart approaches to the game. Naphtha's courage and youthful enthusiasm also helped me out when I was struggling with energy due to teaching in the inner city. LoNi's ability to develop such a high skill level while playing through a lot of BS and a lot of complaints is something I've tried to take to heart. And nowadays guys like Entropy, Roncli, Morfod, and Strife are an inspiration -- they just keep bringing it, ready to learn from every game, and ready to take anything I don't defend well enough.
