The Observatory Pre-Season 5 Discussion

I wanted to discuss a potential rule change with level selection. No, we're not going to start allowing meme levels. :P

However, it has been suggested to allow players to drop one map from their 3 home levels per week (including the finals tournament), and replace it with something else.

This would allow for the following strategies:
- Replace a home level that's not getting any play.
- Replace a home level that you are having a hard time in.

There's other minor benefits as well. The main issue would be you'd not know what the 3rd level is until the day of, so you'd not be able to prepare for it, which might be a big deal in the finals tournament.

Thoughts on this rule addition?

Maybe only allow it for the prelims? you should have the kinks ironed out of your lvl selection after 3 weeks. I love it tho, I've def had that problem and 100% would have dropped ascend a season or two ago.

im all about expanding level selection. although i could probably play logic and ascend and take2 on a continuous loop, i try to play new stuff. the case for playing more than 3 levels is easy to make: it makes you a better player, it eliminates reliance on tired metagames, it rewards the level makers in our community. I just think introduction of new levels into a VERY SERIOUS COMPETITIVE TOURNAMENT should not be done for competitive edge.

With that in mind, i propose the Entropy Rule ;) If home levels are chosen less than 24 hours in advance, you must choose 3 (or maybe 2 of 3? maybe just 1 of 3??) extended core/core levels. Home levels are formally submitted on the forum. Submitting 3 home levels on the DCL forum doesnt mean you have to play, it's not a binding contract. I realize this level of intricate codification approaches Ranger Danger but I'm tired of trying to learn a level 15 min before the tourney jumps off. This seems like a reasonable compromise.

"Ranger danger"
Yeah, we're our own worst enemy sometimes.

Rotating levels is fine as far as I'm concerned, with or without locking it before the finals. Even if you don't, you can still count on two of the three levels being the same as what they were before.

What about the "three home levels, all heavily angled" situation? Roncli already throws out the ridiculous ones; is that enough? I'm not terribly worried about it since we have a home/home system in the finals which is hard to cheat without being legitimately better than your opponent anyway.

We will implement it this season, but what I want to find out from you guys is should we lock them in after week 3 (ie: You only get to change in weeks 2 and 3) or do we allow a change when the finals comes around? I think a change at the finals is fine, personally, because you still have 2 of the 3 from the previous week.
