A. No, I don't think the ladder concept is stale. The ladder structure is sound but without a sufficient number of active players it will inevitably lose value. As Sirius pointed out I feel like the Descent Rangers is the best place for casual games and they do a great job of hosting all sorts of fun events. The Observatory Tournament has been a fantastic addition this year and I feel like its been very successful in providing a setting for competitive 1v1 anarchy games suitable for both casual and competitive players. Hopefully in time it will help to bring in more players as has been the case with the Descent Rangers. Additionally, there are plenty of other options for people wanting to play Descent ranging from ladder matches, coop sessions and free-for-all anarchy games. All in all, I think theres already plenty on offer to cater for all players.
Q. Are we defining who we are due to our ranking on a ladder of our friends? Is this peer tiering? Who gives a shit anymore what spot you are on the ladder?
A. Admittedly the people I play with the most are generally the ones I get along with the best however, with so few people left playing I think its more of a case of settling for whoever is around. I wouldn't say its peer tiering because there isn't enough active players around for you to avoid the ones you don't like playing. Frankly, I don't care all that much for my spot on the ladder because theres not enough active people around to give the spots much value. Regardless of the spots I try to judge for myself how I match up against the rest of the ladder using different means.
Q. Mark and Jedi are the summit diamonds...are you diamond? Do you think you will ever be diamond? So why try to climb a ladder where you will never reach the summit? Yeah there are times when Mark or Jedi takes a break and/or some lucky person has a great game and they break through and see above the clouds but is that their true spot?
A. I don't think I will ever be gold let alone diamond, but if you never try then you'll never know. We all have different reasons for playing, different goals and different expectations. My goal isn't to be the best pilot on the ladder (as nice as that would be), its to become the best pilot I can possibly be. We can't all be diamond but thats not to say in time we can't become fierce, intelligent and skilful pilots in our own right. Other reasons to play on the ladder include scaling your own tier, earning a promotion, defending your home, fighting off those that challenge you, contesting tier trophies and achieving excellence in the subgames you love. Activity isn't great at the moment meaning you might not be able to play the games you'd otherwise hope to play, so your goals and expectations have to adapt to the ladder in its current state and not just at its optimum.
Q. What needs to be done to make people happy and stay and not give up and retire like it’s some kind of statement of futility? ... I would like to hear of any ideas if you still have a shred of interest in this game, of what we can do to draw and keep more people to this community. Right now on the dcl, there are about 7 people competing half regularly. Ummm......SEVEN!!! That’s pretty pathetic ... PLEASE speak up and tell us what it would take to make you want to be here with us more?
