What's everyone using to listen to descent?

I have a couple complaints about my low budget earbuds, of which i have 3 or 4 pairs that get thrown into my rotation. 1: The homing sound kinda gets lost in a pitched battle. Definitely doesn't seem as strong as before and I'm tired of getting nicked by homers I don't know are coming. This could be a settings issue, i suppose. Or maybe my auditory cortex is deteriorating. 2: Having a tough time differentiating sounds behind me and in front of me. This is definitely the biggest problem. Thoughts? Any one here use a surround sound speaker setup and do they like it? Do you think it's significantly better for locating a sound in space than headphones/earbuds? Best would be a recommendation for a pair of head phones that are good and cheap as speakers aren't feasible.

Yeah, the lack of surround sound really bothers me. I tried using a surround sound setup that I use with my Xbox, but it seemed to have no effect. I just use nice earphones... but the difference in directional sound between using them with Descent, and using them with the surround sound setup with my Xbox, is extremely noticeable.

I.e. with my Xbox I can use them with this device:

But with Descent I just use the headphones by themselves, pictured here with the box... but the box seemed to do absolutely no good with Descent, so I don't bother using it now and just use the headphones:

The "directionalness" of the sound is far from ideal I think, but I don't know if there is a solution to that. If there is, I'd love to hear it. Back in the day I just used earbuds... but I don't think there's been much improvement. Heck, when shooting plasma I can't hear anything else now... I don't know if it's always been that way, but the sound has not aged well, imo.
