Dynamic Colored Lighting toggling itself?
Check out these two videos:
me vs Zing in Vamped: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wab2KuPqGJE?t=955 (note the smart exploding at 16:00 gives off no light)
me vs Morfod in June Bug: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr_-AO4ewaI?t=445 (note the smart exploding at 7:30 gives off green light, also reactor fire is clearly giving off red light)
These games were played last night back to back, with no changing of settings on my part. Dynamic Colored Lighting is clearly off in Vamped, and clearly on in June Bug (I did not notice it at the time, and thankfully it didn't help me any, Morfod still stomped me). I checked the setting this morning, and it was toggled on.
How could this have happened? This is not a setting I touch. If Jedi hadn't said something about it in one of my demo playblacks from the LAN, I wouldn't have even checked my games... since I don't touch the setting normally, it's concerning that this is coming on by itself. I spot checked a bunch of my other games and the setting does not seem to be on, including in another June Bug game from the LAN.

I do not have colored dynamic lighting enabled on my machine.
However, I was the host for last night's game, and I've never bothered to check the box enabling it for other players. It would appear to have always been checked ON for every game I've hosted.
Maybe that's why people have been able to pinpoint me in some of my camping spots...

I didn't even know that was a net game option. I'll check to see if I have that turned off when I get home.
Curious question. Dynamic colored lighting is bad for competitive games... Retro is a mod for competitive players... Shouldn't the option just be removed from Retro? Make it a non-factor and leave no question.

Eh, just like autoleveling, the competitive scene is diligent enough to turn it the hell off.

Autoleveling is different though, we turn that off because it disrupts our flight. I actually knew some scary pilots back in the day that used autoleveling, Testiculese was one if I recall.
This is more about getting more information about your surroundings than you should be getting, which should be disabled in a competitive environment.

This was our last non-LAN game that you hosted, and sure enough it's on here. How am I not noticing this when I play? I guess I have the setting for net games off because I don't see it in games I host.
Lesson learned! It's off now.

Dynamic colored lighting is considered a cheat on DCL -- though not one we take too seriously for new players. They often have it on until someone reminds them they're supposed to turn it off. But that's why there's an option when hosting a netgame to turn it off for all players. It overrides your personal settings. Pretty much anyone who's been hosting ladder matches for a while has the netgame setting set correctly, so it's kind of a non-issue.
Dynamic colored lighting hasn't been removed entirely from Retro because some of the other competitive communities consider it a player preference or even like it. DCL may be the most active community that Retro serves at the moment, but it hasn't always been that way. I try not to associate Retro with DCL too strongly; it's for the competitive Descent community as a whole.
