Recommended Game Version

I recommend using Retro 1.4X3 for DCL matches.
Windows:

D2:

Mac -- thanks Arch_Angel! (Tested on OSX 10.9):
D1:
D2:
Why is 58.1 the base recommended version and not 57.3?
- Short packets are too inaccurate to be suitable for high level competitive play; 58.1 is needed so they can be disabled.
What's in Retro Mod that isn't in the base 58.1?
- Retro homers: Homing missiles restored to original Descent behavior capped at 30 FPS (25 in D1).
- Sniper packets: Shots go in the same direction on your opponent's screen as on yours
- Old School Mouse: Adds a base sensitivity slider so you can control the 'kick' when you start turning, as you used to be able to do in D1x with a low framecap
- (D1) Tracker fix -- you can use the tracker again. [Obsolete, base Rebirth works with the tracker again]
- (D2) In-game messaging fix -- messages display the full message and the sender's name and color again
- Improved collision detection (consistent close performance, particularly with homers and fast small-blast weapons like gauss)
This version is not required for ladder matches, but it is definitely recommended.
-------------
Minor changes
- Slightly modifies missile respawn algorithm to make observatory levels work a little better.
- Allows you to disable cockpit view for easy switching between bar and full screen
- Allows disabling sticky rear view
- Allows autoselect-after-firing, so you switch to a weapon you picked up while firing after you stop
- Allows joystick undercalibration from within Descent itself
