Why? it's a minor option, and nobody plays without it anymore which is aggravating, because I love it.
EDIT: Is it malicious behaviour to play without it still?
In a game of hide and seek it's better imo
-- But alas the MAJORITY will agree otherwise as usual

shoulda always been a rule....perhaps we took for granted that everyone played with it this way already.

Well, you can always agree to turn it off.
You don't *have* to play a match under the default settings. But we have default settings so that people don't get surprised by things they feel are significant, so we don't have arguments about the game being hosted in an unfair way. You can play with the setting any way you like -- just, you don't get to blindside people by hosting and surprising them. At least mention it. That is all the rule is for.

Uh, this ones new to me. In the microcosm I play in we don't do bright player ships. The lighting is just something you can use to your advantage if you're trying to hide. This has the potential to change the game hugely as you lose a whole aspect of the strategy.

There's a strong (universal?) tradition of bright ships in competitive 1v1 descent. If some hosted without bright ships and didn't tell me, I'd be pissed. It would be like if someone hosted on hotshot and didn't tell me.
