To clarify -- I'm the one who set up the Descent discord server, as a trial run, with the expectation that we'd either agree (between Rangers/DCL/others) that we liked it more and all switch, or that enough people wouldn't want to switch so we'd stay on mumble. We ended up staying on mumble. The main reasons I remember:

- some people (Icewolf in particular) couldn't get Discord to run, either in browser or standalone

- Discord treated text and voice channels separately, so you couldn't jump into a channel and use text to speech with someone else who was using voice; you had to jump into two separate channels for that.

- Discord stores history for everyone to read, which means conversations aren't limited to those in the channel, but to any future people joining the channel. (This is good in the sense that you can tag people like "hey @roncli check out these comments on desired obs mode features" but bad in the sense that everything you say becomes public record.)

There are lots of things I like about Discord (especially being able to keep multiple servers open, so you can tab between discussions -- it means I can be talking about game design with the Clicker Heroes devs and then see that Observatory is starting up, and then even point people in other servers to observatory and keep up with what they're saying about it.) It just didn't work for this community last time we tried it.

This here is probably THE biggest reason to NOT switch to Discord, IMHO. I know Discord habits well enough to know that people are simply not going to connect to voice chat just because they're up for a game. I really feel that the "forced voice" aspect of Mumble - as much as I personally don't care for it - is why the community is still together, because it gets people PLAYING.[/quote]

It's the only reason that really matters.

This reason alone is enough for me to say that we stay on MUMBLE.

Someone message me what “forced voice” is... I’m #confused ‘cause no one forced me to use my voice. In fact, I only use my voice in Mumble for Mom’s Spaghetti.

Mark, it's when you log in. On Discord, you don't end up in a voice channel. On Mumble, you do.

Ah ha! The reason for my confusion then is the fact that all voice channels in Mumble are also text channels. Now I see what it means! Thanks, Ronster!

I like Mumble because freedom.

Also, as others have said, Discord's handling of voice and text channels is clunky. Finally, Discord's boot time is annoying. I just want something functional, reliable, and lightweight - and Mumble fits the bill.
