Descent Champions Legacy: changes to DCL
Posted: Mon Aug 03, 2020 3:09 pm
On Friday, August 7, Descent Champions Ladder will become Descent Champions Legacy.
The site was built to give competitors a place to play and record their 1v1 Descent matches, strive for glory, and climb the ranks and the ratings. Over the years, many of us have set our own goals and standards for what glory would look like for us, be it reaching the next tier or getting a win against a great pilot or putting together a dominant streak or surpassing a rival or simply playing a lot.
We no longer have the activity across multiple levels to sustain ranks and ratings. We have had seasons where multiple pilots finished in the top 10 without playing a match. We've had entire seasons pass without a single silver-v-silver match. We've had entire seasons without a successful promotion. It no longer makes sense to try to maintain a #1 ladder spot, skill ratings, or promotions -- the things that make DCL a *ladder*. As of Friday, we will no longer have rankings or skill ratings and will therefore no longer function as a ladder.
But Descent still lives, and players continue to play 1v1 matches. Descent Champions Legacy will allow pilots to continue to add to their lifetime records. Pilots can continue to play and submit matches, either as any tier they have been rated as (bronze, silver, gold, or diamond) or as a retired pilot who is not in any tier. Wins, losses, personal streaks, and stats will continue to add to pilots' ongoing legacies, in a new "legacy" season, but without gaining or losing ranks or ratings or promotions.
**We will be switching to the new unranked system on Friday, August 7, 9 pm Eastern time / 6 pm Pacific time**, and we encourage pilots to get in any ranked matches they want before that time, and then to join us on Discord for a Legacy Party to play new matches and to reminisce
