Oh, I think we should fix it! It would be a change not to spawn close to people any more -- and a 5 cube radius is simultaneously pretty big, and small enough to work in most levels -- but I don't think anyone actually *likes* spawn kills on average, and as DKH pointed out to me long ago, probably the only thing we can all agree on unanimously is that original behavior ought to win. So hey. Original behavior.
But it is worth noting that DCL has had something in the neighborhood of 12,000 matches played at this point, over three and a half years. So "It's always been this way on the ladder" is starting to carry more and more weight as an argument. Competitive settings should remain stable.

Go ahead and fix it if needed. For me, I actually enjoyed this because it taught me one of my new era essential skills: Taking time before respawning. I always used to mash a button asap to respawn, and often regretted it. I've never regretted waiting and breathing a few breathes before respawning.

I love Descent. I fail to see how it is broken. I accept it for what it is, awesome. I'm not a fan of constantly revising a game and making changes for the sake of it. For me, thats what the proposed change to spawn points represents. Additional host options aren't an issue as the players involved can choose the settings they want to use. However, making outright changes to the game affects everyone that plays Descent and should only be implemented if absolutely necessary.
So tell me. How does limiting the number of potential respawn points make Descent fair, when both players already have an equal chance of benefitting from close respawns. Wouldn't this make it virtually impossible for a respawning pilot to quickly gather some of their spew? In a control map like Eris, would it be fair if a respawning player could only spawn far away from the limited number of powerups available in the level? Is it fair to deny a respawning pilot the chance to instantly ambush their opponent with lasers and concussion missiles, potentially earning them a vital kill in the process? Also, by reducing the number of respawn points available after a death, wouldn't this make it easier for a player whos aware of the spawn points, to deduce the location of their opponent?
I'm no different to anyone else. There are certain things that frustrate the hell out of me in my matches, but instead of moaning about them or calling for outright changes to the game, I just keep on playing. Maybe some people misinterpret making endless changes to a game as making progress. Maybe some peope are used to modern, rushed-out incomplete games that require constant tweaking. Maybe some people have lost sight of just how great it is to play Descent in its current form. Regardless of the reason its sad that you only ever hear about whats wrong with the game when theres so much that makes it great. Making a change to the distance of respawn points is unnecessary as the game is fine just the way it is. I suggest that people try to adapt to the game and stop trying to find ways for the game to adapt to them.

Dei Dei: I'm sure you could! But I find that I'm ready for it when I'm not insta spawning myself in! A prepared mind is a strong mind! Or something profound-ish sounding...
Edit: Also, you're more likely to catch your opponent off guard if you spawn right in front of them 10 seconds after you die, rather than the instant respawn we've all come to expect... maybe? I dunno...
