roncli
(According To His Opponents)
With his enthusiasm for Descent, his work on retro, the SDS podcast, and Observatory, Roncli knows the game and he's gonna play it, and he's never gonna let you down.

We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it
Inside we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it!

Most knew you much more as an entertainer and a community figure. But I was privileged to catch you in a moment of competitive fire, and it still brings a smile to my face. At the 20th anniversary LAN in Denver, we came face to face in the tournament. There was a list of five coreish levels that we were supposed to counterpick off of, and you brushed it aside casually and asked for June Bug. JUNE BUG! A bold choice against me. A favorite level of mine, and at the time I had a bit of a reputation there. But you are funky. And brave. And bold. And wanted to see it.

It went predictably. >:)

But I'll always love that you asked.

Roncli stole me from D1 and I still appreciate it.

Final Walker’s Log:
“I’ve wandered this beautiful countryside for millions of miles on my way out of ColoRayDoe... all I can think is to put to rest what you thought of me, while I clean this slate with the hands of uncertainty. So let mercy come and wash away what I've done. So, for what I’ve done I face myself and make the long trek to see that man again.

The terrain is rough, ragged, breathing is harder than it should be, noises seem to be coming from everywhere with no way to pin down their actual location... It’s clear to me I’ve arrived at my destination: Ronald’s home... I’ve arrived at... WYNDHAM.”

There's always a fondness in my heart for Roncli: because a few years after I played single-player via Rebirth and off-handedly learned about multiplayer, it was his multiplayer stream on Twitch that made me think "What is that? This looks cool."

His upstanding behaviour and grace, and his passion to improve Descent not just for the sake of improvement, but for the community, will always be nothing less than admirable.

Thank you for all your work Roncli. Coming up with Observer mode, the Observatory, and everything else: you've definitely been an important character in this community. :)

What is it with Rons being prominent in various aspects of my life? First I've got Ronald D. Moore of Star Trek: TNG fame, I've got Ronald Valdez whenever I listen to Descent II's redbook audio, I've got...um...(okay, there's not a lot of Rons prominent in my life after all)...

...And then there's one Ronald Clifford, prominent in the playerbase community of Descent. I remember reading your name in association with Descent 3 back in the day; likely as early as the PXO days, when I started playing D3 around 2000-2001.

But what comes to everyone's mind now is The Observatory, and as I've told you voice-to-voice, it was something that absolutely *floored* me when I saw it in January 2017. It was the Finals, Phyrex vs. Sirius in Faster, and...I had never *seen* Descent 1 in an Observer mode like that before! That wowed me! It was already enough of a miracle that Descent was streamed on Twitch as it is, but to have Descent showcased like *that*?! It was nothing short of amazing, and I got hooked since. Your hosting, the setting up of the tournament, you and Birdseye commentating on each match...it made Descent into a watchable sport. And as a casual player (to this day), I had never viewed it in that light before.

But more than that, you are an excellent coder. You've certainly contributed to a source port everyone on the Observatory and on this very Ladder uses to this day, *and* you continue to support the 6DoF community in your own ways still. And although I wish you streamed Descent more frequently, that you still do the Observatory at all (and also being able to put up with someone like me finally coming in as a participant) is something I appreciate, Roncli.

Thanks for what you've done...and, again, for putting up with me.

I remember you picking me up from the airport in Denver and letting me snore in the same hotel room, just to surprise everyone when I showed up to D20. Our bronze/silver matchups were the clownshow of the DCL, for anyone catching your stream. Working with you was a delight and pleasure, and without you my voice would have been greatly diminished. Thank-you so much for your incredible work in turning Descent into a spectator e-sport.

Have you hugged a toaster today?
