I, for one will be sad to see you go. Its not like I'm gonna tell you anything I haven't already, everyone knows you are insanely talented and are clearly one of the best Descent players there ever has been. But actually you can be pretty cool too just chatting about the game, giving advice on different setups or abusing the hell out of Cyrus, PFunk or some other poor soul over the mic in a big ffa
. I also know why you retired and thats fair enough, if you're unable to enjoy the game for whatever reason then for me, thats as good a time as any to call it quits.
Its never easy being at the top because naturally, everyone is going to be gunning for you. Your skills, feats and achievements routinely get overlooked because people come to expect greatness of you. And if you ever fail to meet this exceedingly high level of expectation, no doubt you're going to get jumped on by the Descent Paparazi (love you Roncli and Morf
) and the rest of the ladder. You've said many a time that you're not a great loser and that you'd like to be humble after games but most of the time it infuriates the hell out of you. Thats fair, anytime you're doing your utmost to defeat someone you're never going to feel great about coming up short. Actually theres an old saying I think is quite appropriate, which goes something like "show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser". Clearly your stubborness, determination and outright refusal to lose to anyone has gotten you to the top of the ladder. Its part of who you are and its definitely one of the reasons I cut you more slack than most of the people here.
Personally, I see you as a kind of balancing force that maintains the equilibrium of the ladder. If someone has become stronger, if someone is being out of line, if someone gets ahead of themselves, you're there to humble them and bring order back to the ladder. Kind of like the central bully who operates on a strict code of Descent justice, keeping all of the would-be bullies in line
. And thats another great thing about you, you will play anyone, you will play in there strongest levels, you will not shy away from anyone, you will gladly give rematches, you will ask for rematches if you dont think the score is a fair reflection of the pilot's skill and you consistently seek out the strongest players on and off of the ladder. You certainly have game and no one can ever deny that.
You're a big loss to the ladder having retired and its definitely not the same without you competing, but to be fair no ones going to be playing on the ladder forever. Maybe all you can hope to do is achieve some goals, satisfy your need to compete with others and hope to get some sort of enjoyment out of the process. Regardless, Descent will still be here and I'll be sure to catch some fun games with you when I can. Whether you come back or stay retired for good, I wish you all the best and I hope you find what you're looking for in the process.
