Leto: "What if a player doesn't like the overall style of core levels? Or is simply tired of them? With the challenge system (and especially with regard to promos), there is a small, but not insignificant, possibility that a player can in fact force another to play in levels of this narrow style. "
If a player doesn't like the overall style of core levels then they aren't the target audience of the DCL as the core levels are chosen by how much they get played by the DCL community.
There are a handful of levels in core that I'm not personally a fan of. I had better be good in them though since that is what the majority of pilots are playing!! It's kinda the point.
Also, you can only be forced to play core levels in an official challenge....and in a Diamond promo challenge. The thing is, there are very few forced challenges happening that would skew the numbers in favor of perpetuating core levels. very few.
The bottom line is the majority of pilots are choosing to play core and core changes as the communities tastes change as evidenced by new levels making it in and some old levels falling out every season.
The core levels exist for one major reason. To prevent a #1 pilot from dictating the terms of a level and it's loadout to a lower ranked pilot as has happened on every ladder that has ever existed before this one.

I will absolutely go to the mat over this point, though. If you are excellent at something, I don't care if it's something as exotic as megas or shakers or x4 or FRP or Ugh or Monkey Bars, shoot, if you can figure out a way to be excellent at D2 Puck for crying out loud . . . If you are excellent at something, other pilots should recognize it. I want props, I want pilots challenging themselves going after you there, and while I have said I don't want to be the attitude police, I will not STAND for people dismissing a subgame someone else has become excellent at. Respect excellence. Period. It's like one of two things I will get on people for in forums and comments.
To be terribly explicit -- if there's something you think is awesome, and you want to get good at it, and other pilots want to join you in competing there, and someone wants to dismiss it as not mattering because it's not core . . . I will be very angry. It doesn't matter for *promotions*, but Respect. Excellence.
So go pick something you care about, learn to rule at it, and I *expect* people to acknowledge your progress. I see that as an essential part of our culture.
So if you don't care about core, don't play core. Rule Blubird and take all comers. Getting promoted is one goal. Take it on if it's something you want to do. Ignore it if it isn't.
