Just saying Hi!
Hey all. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. Just signed up to the forums.
A few days ago I had an urge to play through the Descent series. My best gaming memories come from my time spent playing Descent in the 90's. So I rummaged through my box of old PC games and pulled out my copies of Descent, installed them and started playing D1 through DOSbox. Seeing the Multiplayer menu option got me thinking whether there were any other Descent fans hiding in the corners of the internet. One Google search later and I stumbled upon DXX-Rebirth, and subsequently this forum.
I have to say a big thanks to those of you who have kept Descent going. Looking forward to playing a few multiplayer games again but may need you guys to help me get set up. If I've been reading correctly, there are currently a couple of versions of DXX-Rebirth - the main release by Zico (v0.58.1) and a modded version by Drakona (v0.58.1-retro-1.2)? I'm guessing you guys are using v0.58.1-retro-1.2? I tried joining a couple of multiplayer games but it showed an incorrect protocol, which I have since found out is due to the different versions being used. I managed to join one game, which I assume was someone using the same version as mine. But when I try to host a game I get an error message saying I likely don't have port 42424 open or the tracker is down. I know the tracker isn't down as I can see other games, and my ports are open via my router and firewall. So not sure why I can't host. Any ideas?
I also read in the DXX-Rebirth forums about a mumble server. Do you guys use the same server? I've joined it once but no one was on.
My Descent skills are rusty to say the least, but improving I'm using keyboard and joystick combo. What do you guys use, and which is best? And is the competition here pretty full on, or are there laid back matches? I'm from Australia. Where is everyone else from?
EDIT: Have just found this - http://descentchampions.org/new_player.php which answers some of my questions

Hi JaYBeeM...welcome back.
Yes, we use mumble the same as the rangers.
Yes, you can find laid back games but most games on the ladder aren't for 'fun'..it's serious competition (which of course IS fun)
Rangers is for laid back multiplayer fun and DCL is for more serious 1 on 1 competition.
Log in to your router and look for port forwarding option and forward your ports to 42424 (this usually resolves hosting issues)
Best way to get solid help is on mumble...whenever there are actually people on it.

Glad you found this :). The mumble server is by far the easiest way to get games, so log on and you can always ask more questions in-person!

I'll be looking for some "for fun" (or scored, doesn't really matter!) Rangers games in April, JayBeeM, after I get through a convention I'm preparing for this month... so hopefully I'll run into you on there and we can get some anarchies going :)
