Trophies
We've had a lot of people take trophies with them into retirement, and generally nothing gets done about it until someone notices it has happened and then bugs an admin about it. We'd like to have a policy that can be automated.
When you retire you should lose your trophies -- obviously. The only question is, where do they go next?
Into a pool for any 2 people to play for?
To the last person who held them?
To the highest ranked pilot who has ever held them?
Interested pilots play a single elimination tournament via Challonge, winner takes the trophy.
Other - any ideas you guys may have will be considered.
What are your thoughts guys!?

I personally don't put much weight on the significance of trophies but the competitive player in me wants to see these things 'mean' something and be difficult to obtain. This ladder is about skill and serious competition...fun is a by-product.
The only suggestion above that I'm not particularly fond of is the 'the first of any 2 players to play a match for it/winner gets it'
The tournament idea is interesting and could be fun...but also seems to be the most 'complicated' of the suggested remedies.
I'm curious to see what other suggestions people might come up with.

I vote for putting them in a pool, and any two people can play a qualifying match (fusion level for the fusion trophy) just as they would do any other DCL match.

I want the solution to be mostly foolproof (e.g. does away with issues of succession or has sufficient contingencies for them) and also not be a lot of administrative or coding work. I like Ryguy's idea for both of those reasons. Can it be tweaked to meet Jed's concerns about just anyone grabbing it undeservedly?
Maybe it's put up for grab in a forum post and the two highest ranked players who want to play for it get first shot at the orphaned trophy, with the qualifying match to take place within 7 days of the contestants being chosen. No qualifying match played within the allotted time means the process repeats, with the two players who didn't get the match done in time 86'd from consideration. The initial "application period" can last 72 hours? If only one person wants to play for it, they are awarded the trophy, for surely they must be a fearsome opponent. If no one wants to play for it, the trophy is retired until further notice/ladder staff's discretion.

If a trophy becomes avaliable, and even the two lowest ranked players play for it and one gets it, all that has to be done is issue a challenge. If the player holding the trophy doesn't respond (s)he gets rank dropped and loses said trophy. If the player responds, a lowly ranked player would likely lose. Either way, it wouldn't stay with the low ranked person for long. I don't think we should only include the highest ranked people as being eligible. Naturally, the highest ranked people will end up with it, but it is kind of boring if it starts there.
