the highest ranked of the people who played for the trophy.
One problem with this: say I play ryguy, and I'm currently #4 or whatever spot I'm in. He beats me, and takes my spot. Then some matches happen above that spot, and someone else drops into #4. Then I play that person and win. We both beat the #4-ranked pilot, so which of us gets the trophy?

Hmm. That is a conundrum. It would essentially have to be the person who was the highest ranked person at the end of the week, or the undefeated person at the end of the week. At least the highest person in that subgame. That is how I understand it anyway.
I still think my proposal would be simpler. It essentially says the trophy is up for grabs; whoever wants it competes for it. The winner of the first match in that game subtype would be the holder until (s)he loses to somebody else in the same game subtype. Really, it would just be that initial match where it is up for grabs to anybody. After that, it would be treated how trophies are currently treated.

So to continue your example, Bahamut decides to challenge Merl and wins, if nothing else took place that week Bahamut would have it.
Let's say the week isn't over and Lotharbot decides to challenge #3 Drakona and wins. Since he beat the #3 pilot, it would be his because #3 is higher than 4 (if nothing else happened)? Or something else happens and #1 beats #2. Then #1 would get it because he had then beaten "the highest ranked." Am I understanding this correctly?
Or, #17 challenges #16 and wins. If that is the only match that week, the new #16 would be the holder. Alternatively, same challenge but #16 wins and no other matches take place. #16 would now own it?
Am I understanding this all correctly?

Alright. It seems to be an improvement over the current way trophies are handled. Is this an executive decision situation, or something that would go to a vote with some of the other proposals?
