Re: jediluke I challenge you
Djcjr, that tournament and those ludicrous scores has been the highlight of my Descent career. I'm convinced that we would have kept trading scores to infinity until we died of old age in our chairs mid game.

The D2 tournament finals (both years) were also great to be a part of - I think up until then I'd never really seen what high-level D2 was like - it was mostly too easy. But Djcjr could play the same game and better - it was a huge challenge to figure out how to match that. The best I can say I did was push him to overtime, but hey, in that tournament, I'll totally take two second-place medals.
I can say that the old class of elite pilots (1999-2002 I think were the years I remember playing against them) gave me much more trouble than today, but I know for an absolute fact I was nowhere near as good at the game then. Definitely better than average and did pretty well in public games and the D2 Revivals, but struggled to keep pace in Ranger games. But by late 2011 (shortly into the Ranger renaissance), I was winning almost every single game I played. And I still had a lot to learn once the 1v1 scene heated up and I couldn't keep hiding from D1 and dogfighting anymore. I recall I once got blown out by... I think it was Realm, 20 to something like 2 or 3 in Io. Probably in 2000 judging from the archive.org listings. I could probably do that to myself from then now... and am not even gold tier, he was UT...
now I want to play a game and it's too late

That was the era when Realm was hacking. He had around 300 shields per life, and was putting up scores that were way beyond legitimate. He handed me my worst score of that era, by far (also 20-3 in io, 9-22-2000; for comparison I put up 12 on kufyit the same day.) We actually tested the DCL ranking algorithm by running it on IDL data year-by-year, and Realm that year was the farthest ahead of the pack out of any player EVER.
And yeah, I think I'd beat me from that era by a similarly embarrassing score. I honestly think I, right now, am at least on the level of a UT-caliber pilot with hax from the year 2000. And I think you can see it just by watching the demos above, and comparing to demos of high silver pilots now (me, Sirius, Dravis, Deimos, Merl, Behemoth). In the old demos you see lots of standoff dogfights, with both ships contentedly shooting at each other from medium range. In a modern game, we're always trying to change the range and the angle of the fight to our own advantage. In the old demos you see a lot of shots that are either aimed right at the opposing ship, or just kinda lazily flooding an area. In the modern game, every shot is part of a pattern of shots designed to push you around, box you in, and kill you. I see more ratting/misdirection tricks in one kill nowadays than in the entire Jedi vs Revenger demo. In the old demos, Birdseye looks unhittable because of his ability to dodge by making small movements; nowadays everyone in gold and silver is capable of making several dodges in a 1x1 hallway.
Those who haven't played in this era are missing out on the best Descent has to offer. The skill level you see in our current silver pilots, even the lower end of silver, is comparable to the best pilots of the past. This era's gold pilots are something that never existed before.

You've more than earned the recognition.
Plus, if I took some LSD just for the hell of it, blacked out, and woke up in Brazil - I'd need a place to stay. Just covering all my bases.
