Re: No blue orb
How about all the gold pilots play a best of 5 double elim bracket and get it settled the old fashioned way?

Entropy, that sounds like a tournament. Something that the DCL considered doing once upon a time but decided against it so as not to take away from the participation with Rangers tournaments.
A tournament depends on matchups. Anyone of the GOLD can lose against any other pilot depending on the level. Double elimination helps....but the point of the invuln is simply to recognize when there is someone currently doing something really difficult and special and should be acknowledged. One could argue that I was likely just as good a pilot last season as I am this season but I didn't do anything special enough over a long enough period to warrant the designation so I didn't get it.
It isn't about recognizing who we think the best pilot is. It's about pointing out which of the best pilots are doing something truly worth pointing out.
Your record is part of it. Your skill rating is another part of it. Your accomplishments...streaks..etc are another part. This is made up of a few factors and needs to be given out rarely otherwise it loses it's meaning.

Side note: When I did the D3 Teams Ladder Tournament back in the day, what the other organizations were doing did not factor in. Of course, back then the population was substantially larger, too, as in there was more than one active organization.

roncli,
yeah, the community is too small. We wanted to make sure that we didn't compete too much against it. They were already doing tournaments but did not have a ladder. We have shared members. We just felt it best not to try to take that away from them despite the fact that we think we could do a good job with tournaments.

thanks for a more detailed explanation, I understand a little more now.
On the subject of tournaments, I believe it would add/draw more interest and variety to the ladder, along with the vendetta system.

I don't disagree. I'm certainly 'for' vendetta's being official. We've also come up with an improved challenge system but all of this stuff requires Drakona to do coding for the ladder and her time has been in demand lately. She's spread fairly thin.
Bahamut, you are certainly one of the best pilots on the ladder. It is very difficult to have a winning record vs GOLD pilots. There are only 5 GOLD pilots that have winning records. Be proud of that. I apologize that I can't divulge all of the details as to how someone is chosen for the blue orb but just bare in mind it's not about being really good and more about doing something no one else has done and for an extended period of time while meeting other minimum qualifications.
We are looking to revise some of this as well.
I considered voting in favor of getting rid of it all together but others seem to like it and want it to stay. I don't feel very strongly either way but I wouldn't mind some revision to it.
What do you guys think? Keep it or get rid of it or just better define it for people?

I would like to get to play all of the gold pilots a little more than I do, it's tough when your opponents are bubble, mark392, and yourself.
I can't seem to get a hold of lothar or drakona, sirius either, but those are some I really enjoy to play and just can't get games in; Obviously life > descent

Count me in for vendettas as well, I remember those
Also, I know PHP a bit if coding help is required.
