Re: Congratulations, moh
Well, my main reason is that... this is my last match with him: http://descentchampions.org/view_match.php?id=1744
Probably not a good representation of his current level?

Nothing to see Sirius, that was my skill then, and still my skill now. The ladder algorithm has made a terrible mistake. Thanks for the compliments everyone.

Congrats Moh. Sorry to see you retire though. Felt that pressure back in the day (old IDL UT/LT thing). It took a retirement, a quit, a rejoin as an unnamed player, another quit, and then a final restoration before coming to my senses. Hope to see you back!

Bullshit. Moh, a lot of us have been saying for ages that you should be making gold. The algorithm did not put you in Gold just because you beat me 20-7 the other day. It put you there because you have been putting up consistently gold-quality games for months! Just look at your history man. You're an awesome pilot, and if you say you don't even deserve bronze for the way you fly, how do you think that makes us bronze pilots feel? I'm like an idiot child compared to you! But I'm not quitting, and I don't see the rest of bronze quitting. Not everyone can be the best, but we can all strive to be the best that we can. You've been competing well enough to make gold, and now you get to prove that you can maintain it. If you can't, oh well! Keep trying, keep learning, and be your best!
Get back on the ladder!
Get back on the ladder!

You're a really good pilot, moh. People easily forget -- silver is an extremely tough neighborhood. Being the best of them (or the worst gold) is an EXTREME accomplishment, and worth being proud of!
Skill's continuous. Whether you think you're bottom gold or top silver . . . it's kind of academic. In the mines, they're the same. We've got to put the line somewhere, right? And the algorithm isn't perfect. Sometimes you cross it a few times before settling on one side or the other. We try to make it not do that, but you have good weeks and bad weeks, or you play opponents you match up differently against, and the ladder (and the community!) revises its opinion of you. (You do have a little control over it: the more different opponents you play, especially different opponents close to your level, the more stable your score is.)
But if crossing the line isn't a big deal in terms of your skills, boy does it hugely change your experience on the ladder. Top silver is a way fun place to be. You're the king of a tough neighborhood, you're a threat to everyone on the ladder, you have everyone's respect, and the only thing you hold of value that people come after you for is Top Silver. Which is actually way fun, because you lose it, and then you can try to get it back.
Bottom gold is radically different. You're the easiest source of a gold win, not just for gold, for the WHOLE LADDER, and those are a big deal. Everyone's gunning for you, playing as hard as they can, playing like they have something to prove, every game, forever. Even if you're tired. Even if you're having an off day. Even if it's anarchy or you're testing an experimental new game or your joystick isn't working right. It can be pretty stressful.
Lotharbot's in that seat at the moment. I've been there in the past. It's . . . an experience! And I think some people are going to seek that out, and some would rather avoid it. We'd like to set it up so that to be promoted into gold, you have to be seeking out gold level competition. Likewise with silver, because the same thing happens there . . . though I think it's a lot less intense.
In the mean time, if you don't belong in gold, the ladder will correct itself within a few games. And if you do belong, you'll stay. I know a few games is a long time when it's a surprise, and when being bottom gold isn't something you wanted . . . and I'm sorry it happened that way. We're working on it. But either way it goes? Even having visited gold briefly is a sign that you're great and worthy of congratulations. Attracting the attention of the very best pilots on the ladder, and showing up when they come to test your skills is awesome. No matter how you do. So well done. And keep playing hard and let the chips fall where they may.
