Re: Challenged by Wats
I think Descent multiplayer has the capacity for that kind of 'high level team skill', BUT it is HEAVILY map dependent. And I have yet to see a map that I think "Man teams would be really awesome here." That being said, I do think teams in Descent actually has a lot of potential. Communicating with your teammate where each other is, and where enemies are spotted, and using that information to try to come up with flanks is really solid.
I also think that in a game like Descent, friendly fire should be turned off.

I haven't quite settled on "the answer" there. Friendly fire makes things tougher, absolutely - you have to factor into your strategy how you're going to avoid shooting each other. In my case, because I usually like to hang back a bit, I tend to lean heavily on the vulcan/homing missiles in D1, and gauss 'n' mercs in D2. The other way is to shoot from a different angle - if you're perpendicular from your teammate you are probably not going to get in each other's cross-fire... unless someone strays into it, which definitely happens.
So... having to think about friendly fire does add some dimensions. The question is whether it's worth it - since it does also remove some, for instance by limiting the tactics you can use. I'm not really sure of the answer.

There was a Rangers team tournament a while ago (few years?). I enjoyed it. Probably the only time I have really enjoyed teams in Descent. What made it good? The team I played with had great communication. We won games because we did not kill each other, while our opponents did. I recall a different match that wasn't part of the tournament where my teammate and I won solely because the enemy team killed each other and we did not. When looking at individual scores, they had both of us beat, but their team score was lower. If you can't kill your teammate, the whole dynamic changes. It eliminates any tactical restraint you would need otherwise.

Friendly fire is also a great way to get teammates to hate each other. Why do you think @$$Man and I never talk anymore? ^_^
