Re: Melvin Promotion
Um... so this one is a bit of a surprise. Wish I could grab a spot to figure out what happened to melvin, but apparently everyone else had the same idea.
When Morf had a gold tier challenge, on the other hand, nobody wanted to play him. I'd feel jilted too.

Suicides in promo games make the scores closer, which helps the loser of the match. This is usually the challenger, but not always.
In this particular case, the math works perfectly. 28 opponent-deaths to 22 opponent-deaths is a longer and hence closer game than 20-14. In fact, if you rescale it to 20, you get 20-16 game, so against the expectation of -1, the +5 is exactly as it should be. That's how it's designed to work, though it won't always work out that nicely. The rule of three is a compromise that is mathematically pretty reasonable and easy to remember in game.
If you're the loser of a match and you think you can play 1:1 with someone you're currently at a big deficit against, suiciding can be a valid way to get it back. Playing 1:1 over three suicides gets you a point of margin. This works, as the loser of the match, whether you're the challenger or the defender. It's a gamble, though. You haven't been playing 1:1 so far, and you could lose ground.

OK, I get it. Was thinking the that the rule was in place to help the lower tier challenger, but that was not how the rule was written.

yeah, the rule was put in place so that the person in the lead can't abuse suicides to keep the other person's score low, and therefore create an artificially large margin of victory. Suicides make the game relatively closer.
For the record, there is no suicide rule in Diamond promotion challenge matches. If someone can keep your score low by suiciding and you can't respond effectively, you're not Diamond.

Yeah, I just kind of was basing my interpretation on the circumstances that surrounded the need for the rule, in which i believe gold pilots were suiciding left and right against silver challengers. The rule makes sense and frankly I'm glad that lesser players like morf are afforded this protection.

*picks up and dials number on phone* "Yes, is this the fire department? I just witnessed a very complete burn. Likely first degree. Yes, please send all units to the 'Morfod' residence, otherwise known as, 'the house that h8 built.' Thank you."

Ahhh -- I wanted to do this, but I'm not going to be able to. Sorry. You can have it Sirius.
Melvin -- really excited to see you come this far. Good luck.
