Minor Rules Change (Game Settings)
Re: Minor Rules Change (Game Settings)
Back in 1998, D2 was the popular 1v1 game and D1 was unpopular (due to D2 being framecappable via vsync and D1 not having that option). That's where the bright player ships tradition came from. I couldn't tell you exactly when it was imported into D1 -- only that some of the D1 levels I made back in the day, like Octave (the original, before the modern "Octave Pro" version), didn't have proper internal lighting -- but I never noticed because Bright Player Ships was always set in that era. So certainly it was a part of the expectation in 2004 or so. And I'm pretty sure it's the expectation of most pilots playing right now, based on a quick trawl of the tracker. Going through the list, here's who hosted with and without BPS since last Saturday (looking only at one game per pilot):
with - deimos, vainiac, morfod, rethink, jediluke, maxx, melvin, phyrex, b2af, psion, loveall, dr_phil, skywarp, caniplay, swarthy, neo (Mark392), obi-wan, epicycle, static, entropy, tigeronx, wats, DKH, simpson, rizzo, Yoshimitsu, ddtlee, darky, funcle, cyruss, big_rat, darkman
without - bahamut
Now, whether or not that means it should be the default expectation, it does mean we should *have* a default expectation, because sometimes it will matter and it's BS to blindside someone with an option they didn't expect. Personally I think the default makes the most sense as having it on since that's what almost everybody already does, and pilots can agree to turn it off if they're playing a level where they think it's important (like FRP).

I don't think I'd even want to play FRP with it off. Ambushes are dangerous enough without the ambusher also being invisible. I'd guess that's why things are the way they are.

Crazy that i can misremember shit like that. I would have sworn up and down that bright ships was d1 and d2. meh! anyway, so what's the conclusion? That we dont need a rule because it doesnt make a difference?

Conclusion: Bright Player Ships is a DEFAULT setting by rule
In order to play with this setting altered it must be agreed upon by both parties involved.
