Looks like a demo artifact, actually. The door instantly opening right before your death is the key. I bet when the game was played live, you saw something different.

Invisible smarts definitely do happen on rare occasions. In my case I've seen the reverse -- one of my smarts grazed and detonated on the floor on my end, while on my opponent's end it was a good shot and went on to hit them directly.

Which gives me another thought -- the door which seems to open instantly when you died was probably open the whole time and Jedi had fired a smart through it. But I guess only Jedi's demo would really make it clear.

Haha it was incredible in fact, its the single greatest moment I've ever witnessed playing Descent. I love that we both had the exact same reaction to it and I'm literally astounded even now. This might seem a little over-the-top, but if you appreciate real skill and moments of greatness in Descent then you'll see its clearly warranted. Please watch the demo. You might learn something.
