Re: Phyrex got a raw deal!!!
Diamond is a tough thing, no doubt about it, and we can have a conversation about that some time. Tiers are supposed to be internally competitive; when a pilot can go multiple whole seasons without a gold loss, they don't belong in the tier. If we are honest, whether we look at the math or practical experience, Jeds and Mark are in a class by themselves. A tier of two people is an honest solution, but comes with its own problems. Some sort of quasi tierish thing seems a reasonable solution, but we're still figuring out the details. I don't think anything will work perfectly, but I am glad to have the privilege of studying with them, and love to see excellence at the top of the game.
But with that said, 11 on diamond is *definitely* not a raw deal if you want to be gold. Gold means you regard pilots like me, Cyrus, Souljah, bahamut, Rethink, Vainiac, Morf . . . as peers. It means you are competitive with folks who occasionally *beat* diamond pilots. Maybe 11's tough. Maybe 12's tough. Who cares. Figure it out. By the time you make gold, you should not be looking for targets on those guys, you should be looking for wins. Gold has always meant competitive with the best, and even if we have to put a little bit of an asterisk on competitive in order to have a class with more than two people in it, darn it, it's still supposed to mean that.

Putting it another way, if Mark and Jedi were gold tier instead of platinum, Phyrex would still have had the same opponents and same target scores.
Results of this kind do actually feel right to me - I don't expect gold pilots to beat platinum pilots particularly often, but they should at least be able to hold a decent game together against them. Phyrex doesn't seem to be there yet - hopefully he'll get there, maybe sooner than we think! But Mark and Jedi are great tests for a pilot - if you can be really exposed, they'll figure out how; and if you can't, you're probably ready for gold tier and will do just fine in the challenge.
